All clear?

The abbreviations stand for the three e-signature standards as defined in EU and Swiss law: Simple Electronic Signature (SES), Advanced Electronic Signature (AES), and Qualified Electronic Signature (QES). The AES corresponds to the middle standard. It has a high level of evidential value and is always legally valid when a document is to be signed without formal requirements.

You can use it to sign all documents that do not need to meet formal requirements. However, if a document requires a written form, you must resort to the highest level, the qualified electronic signature (QES), or a handwritten signature. Read more about the difference between advanced and qualified electronic signatures in our guide.

It is not visually apparent whether it is an advanced electronic signature or not. Typically, a visual signature is attached to the document, often including the name and date. However, what is crucial for the validity of the advanced electronic signature is a digital certificate that has been linked to the PDF document — not visible to the eye.

According to Article 26 of the eIDAS Regulation, an advanced electronic signature must be uniquely linked to a signatory, allow for their identification, and be created using data that is (with high probability) under the sole control of the signatory. It must also be provable whether the signed data has been altered afterwards.

One special feature is that we cover two jurisdictions: Skribble is your provider for advanced electronic signatures under both EU law (eIDAS) and Swiss law (ZertES). Another advantage of Skribble: We offer all three e-signature standards from a single source. Depending on your use case, you can flexibly sign with a simple, advanced, or qualified electronic signature without needing to enter into an additional contract with third parties.
